Horse chestnut
Recommended by many pharmacists, horse chestnut can relieve the symptoms of hemorrhoids by promoting blood circulation.
Numerous research articles demonstrate the efficacy of horse chestnut (and its active ingredient escin) in the treatment of hemorrhoids. In a double-blind study, 120mg of escin daily significantly reduced bleeding, itching and swelling in treated patients.
Most pharmacists recommend consuming 250 mg to 375 mg horse chestnut extract, 2 times a day with meals, which corresponds to 80 mg to 150 mg escin per day.
Psyllium
Psyllium is an ally of good transit, one of the ways to combat hemorrhoidal symptoms. The effectiveness of psyllium against hemorrhoids is well supported by research.
Indeed, a study among 378 patients, including a double-blind control, concluded that a fiber supplement was effective not only in relieving hemorrhoid symptoms, but also in reducing their recurrence.
The study shows that consumption of the fiber supplement improved the chances of recovery by 47% and reduced bleeding by 50%.
Fragon Little Holly
Fragrance works in a very similar way to horse chestnut: it is also a natural ingredient that promotes blood circulation.
Its effectiveness has been particularly proven in the treatment of heavy legs.
Lifestyle changes
Psyllium is effective against hemorrhoids thanks to its beneficial effect on transit. It is also possible to improve transit through lifestyle changes, which can help relieve hemorrhoids:
- Change your diet: increasing the fiber content of your diet can improve transit (by eating more fruit, nuts, vegetables, etc.).
- Better hydration: drinking more water can help soften stools
- Increase physical activity: regular physical activity (walking, running, etc.) can also improve transit.
Sitz baths
Finally, sitz baths (soaking your bottom in a basin of lukewarm water, several times a day) are often suggested as a natural method of relieving hemorrhoids.
However, there are no rigorous scientific studies confirming the efficacy of sitz baths against hemorrhoids. However, this method can be used in conjunction with other methods or treatments.
